Taco Seasoning

I'll admit, when told something that I've eaten my entire life is not longer good for me, I generally take it with a grain of salt. I feel like every day there is a new study out saying something else is going to kill you. You then see another thing the next day saying that thing is perfectly healthy. Being that I'm not a scientist, I generally go with the rule that if I've eaten something pretty frequently up to this point, being that I'm alive and healthy, that thing is probably ok.

My one exception, however, is taco seasoning. Given what I said earlier, there really is no logic for why I'm all of a sudden against the packaged seasoning. However, after a recent Wildtree party at my sister in law's house, I was convinced that Old El Paso was one day going to give me cancer. Ok, maybe not cancer, but I did leave feeling like I shouldn't submit my family to those packets any longer. The sodium levels and "mystery ingredients" just did not sound healthy.

Besides, making your own seasoning is much more inexpensive. All the spices included are ones that are frequently used, so more than likely you already have them.

Taco Seasoning
From Iowa Girl Eats
2 1/2 tsp. chili powder
3/4 tsp. cumin
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1/8 tsp. onion powder
1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes
1/8 tsp. dried oregano
1/4 cup water

Mix seasonings. When adding to the desired meat or vegetables, mix in the 1/4 cup water.

Enjoy!

  2. Is all that for one use? How much turkey meat can it accommodate? !

    1. Yes this would be the equivalent of a package of seasoning. I used it with about a pound of turkey meat. But in the long run it still ends up being cheaper considering most of these spices are ones that are commonly used. I had all of them already in my pantry.
